History of Waffle Makers

The “Waffle Iron” has come a long way. The earliest known models of waffle making devices were found to have originated in the 14th century. These were made from two iron plates with hinges and a locking mechanism that was attached to long wooden handles that were held over an open flame. The artisans that made them for the noble families often decorated them. They can be found with “coat of arms”, religious symbols and other scenes including landscapes. These patterns were imprinted on the waffle itself.
The Dutch brought this practice with them to the New World in the 1620’s. the first patent on a waffle iron was made in 1869 and General Electric made the very first electric waffle iron in 1911. The Heating element was a revolutionary design by Thomas Steckbeck. His was the first to include a thermostat. It was not a pretty appliance but it made a breakfast that included waffles more convenient.

This useful kitchen appliance has seen its share of innovations and now what we have today is so far from the hinged steel plates that the early settlers would not recognize it. The patterns we have come to associate with waffles today was first used in Belgium.
The design of the waffle makers of today make them not only easy to use but also easy to clean. With the ease of making a grill cheese sandwich it is possible to make breakfast or a quick and nutritious snack using the waffle iron.
The problem we run into today is finding the right waffle iron for our way of life. Today you have waffle irons that make traditional waffles and even waffles as thin as crepes. Most homemakers tend to buy the waffle irons that create what is considered to be regular or traditional types of waffles.

When presented with a choice between a light and airy fresh waffle and some toaster or microwaveable type, the clear choice is always the fresh ones. Getting a waffle iron for your family presents its own set of challenges. The choices are numerous, starting with whether you want one that makes traditional or Belgian. You can get a maker that has an indicator light or make a buzzing sound, coated or not coated, it can all get to be a bit confusing.
Reading reviews from consumer panels or professionals can give you an idea of what is out here and how they may perform. For a true idea read as many reviews from people who have actually bought the type of waffle iron you are thinking about buying.

Consumer guides can help take out some of the guesswork when it comes to buying a waffle iron. These panels will buy several different brands of the latest versions of waffle irons. Test each one and give honest reviews about the performance of each one.
Before you head on out to the store or go online to make a purchase of a waffle iron read a few reviews and make a more informed choice. Price, performance and durability are all discussed in a consumer guide and this will give you the heads up on what to buy and even when is the best time to buy.
